Life in Seaside/Monterey Bay, CA?

I am a San Diego native and I am seriously considering transferring to Cal State Monterey Bay in the Fall. I've been to Monterey Bay once, but it was a long time ago, and I've been trying to do research on the area and how life is like there. From someone who has spent some time there or is living there now, I would love your input. How is the public transportation (I won't have a car) - is it pretty accessible? How about shopping-wise (I'm a girl, so I HAD to ask)? How is it recreationally -- is there a lot to do? I've read some pretty negative reviews about its lack of nightlife. Also, are there part-time jobs available for students?
