How to fish? Ive tried everything!!?

Ok I have tried a couple times going to a stocked lake. And yet no bites. Today I tried a very highly recommended spot on the necanicum river in seaside oregon and still nothing. I used powerbait, salmon eggs, and trout marshmellows in combonations and by themselves. I used different lines and used bobbers and no bobbers but still nothing. What am I doing wrong, and why does everyone ask me what i'm fishing for? Does it matter what i'm fishing for because honestly i'm not trying to catch anything specific. I've never caught a fish before and am now 20. I would love to catch something even if its just an anchovie.
